There were about 5 different trips that we took all together looking for places and I wanted to condense them down to one post. We had a good time looking at places and there were definitely some highlights and some lowlights. The cultural differences definitely came into play with random layouts, small kitchens, and way too many bidets. Jess will probably have more on her site about these trips eventually. We weren’t sure what to expect so we asked to see all the different recommended villages including: Nicolosi, Trecastagni, Belpasso, Mascalucia, San Gregorio, Aci Castello, Aci Catena, and Aci Trezza. Below are some of the pictures of the places and the fun pit stops that we had along the way.
Entrance to our final decision…. with a bit of mail buildup that I just noticed in the pic.
Nice new house in Mascalucia, but no views and not near any civilization
New townhouse in Mascalucia… not that great
Pit stop at an underground wine cellar, where you can fill up a 1L water bottle with wine for 2 Euros.. and it was good wine!
Nice view from a new place in San Gregorio.. but still had lots of work to go and the neighbor decided to adopt Cujo.
New, but small kitchen in Aci Trezza. For a culture that revolves around food, we were surprised to see a lot of small kitchens
Huge patio near the water at a place in Aci Trezza
The weary international house hunters
Pit stop at Eden Bar for some Cafe Macchiados (Espressos with a little foamed cream on the top) and Jess found her new favorite pastry with Pistachios
Another Huge patio in Aci Catena, but the house was a bit wacky.
Space capsule shower in Nicolosi
Jess is a big fan of this bathroom 🙂
Kitchen in Nicolosi
Nice living room in Nicolosi
View of Mount Etna from the “Monster House” in Aci Catena
Back Yard of the “Monster House”
An Inside pic of the “monster house” . Still construction happening.
Amazing amount of stone work at the ‘Monster House”
Named the “monster house” because it had 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms including a butler section. Ridiculous place, but way too big for us and they have a lot of work left to do. This pic shows the Italians explaining their logic for having 5 bathrooms downstairs one door down from each other…ha
Nice backyard with a pool
Nice view of Mount Etna from balcony
Kitchen at “family house”
Nice family house in Mascalucia
Overall we were very impressed with the selection of houses that we saw. We had a lot lower expectations when we first moved over here. No one really told us what to expect in terms of housing so we were expecting a very tiny place in a city or something. Instead we had a selection of these very big places that all at least triple the size of the place we left in San Diego. The biggest surprise was how much each of these places were asking for rent because it was very very low in comparison to what you would pay for a comparable place back in San Diego.
